Subaru Impreza Review
To some people the WRX and its rival Mitsubishi Evo
are ugly automotive yobos. You’re unlikely to pull in one but if
you can convince your missus that it’s safer than you having a
motorcycle then you can savour the kind of performance that
Porsche owners enjoy. And that performance is available rain or
shine thanks to the rally-derived chassis that finds grip even
when there is none. The Impreza feels less hardcore than the Evo
but it’s a little more inclined to slide about on the road if
you like that sort of thing.

BEHIND THE WHEEL
The essentials are well taken care of – supportive bucket seats
and a nice steering wheel as befit a real driver’s car. Interior
quality is much improved over the previous model.
COMFORT
Rear space is comparatively good. It’s beaten by the best
hatchbacks but they can’t match the WRX for performance and few
performance cars can offer rear doors even if they have rear
seats.
EQUIPMENT
You get essentials like air-con and electric windows, plus some
rally-derived hardware like Suretrac limited-slip differentials
and intercooler water spray.
PERFORMANCE
The flat-four engine emits a very charismatic note and is
available in various states of tune – 221bhp, or 261 if you opt
for the Sti. Add the Prodrive performance pack and power jumps
to 305bhp.
BUYING USED
There are plenty about but look carefully for signs of abuse,
accident damage, or aftermarket tuning. If you want a
highly-tuned example get one with official Prodrive
modifications.
